Korean Culture & Customs
안녕하세요
annyeonghaseyo
Greetings & farewells
안녕 literally means 'peace/well-being', so 안녕하세요 asks 'are you at peace?'. When parting, the one leaving hears 안녕히 계세요 ('stay in peace') and the one staying says 안녕히 가세요 ('go in peace'). Casual 안녕 works for both hi and bye.
