Active vs passive pair 걸다/걸리다

How to use it

걸다 is the active 'hang/hook/place (a call)'; 걸리다 is its passive/intransitive 'be hung / get caught / take (time)'. 그림을 걸다 = hang a picture; 그림이 걸리다 = a picture is hung. 걸리다 also means 'be caught' or 'take time'.

걸다 takes 을/를; 걸리다 takes 이/가.,걸리다 idioms: 시간이 걸리다, 감기에 걸리다.
