Korean Grammar Patterns
돼 vs 되어, 해 vs 하여 (contraction)
Meaning
Contraction spelling: 돼=되어
How to use it
돼 is the contraction of 되어, and 해 is the contraction of 하여. Wherever 되어/하여 fits you may write 돼/해, but use 되/하 (stem alone) before consonant endings like -고, -면, -지. Quick test: if 되어 fits, write 돼; if not, write 되.
Test by swapping 하다: 해→돼, 하→되.,Sentence-final standalone form is always 돼/해, never 되/하.
Examples
| Korean | English |
|---|---|
| 이렇게 하면 안 돼요 (O) / 안 되요 (X) ireoke hamyeon an dwaeyo (O) / an doeyo (X) | Correct: '안 돼요' because 되어요 → 돼요; '되요' is wrong. |
| 꿈이 이루어지길 바라요 — 되고 싶어요 (O) / 돼고 싶어요 (X) kkumi irueojigil barayo — doego sipeoyo (O) / dwaego sipeoyo (X) | Before -고 use stem 되-: '되고 싶어요' is right, '돼고' is wrong. |
| 공부를 열심히 해 (O) / 하 (X) gongbureul yeolsimhi hae (O) / ha (X) | Standalone command is 해 (=하여), never bare 하. |
