Korean Grammar Patterns

돌아가시다

Meaning

Honorific 'pass away' vs 'go back'

How to use it

돌아가시다 is the honorific euphemism for 'pass away' (죽다). It is also literally 돌아가다 ('go back') + the honorific 시. Context and particles resolve the ambiguity: 할아버지가 돌아가셨다 = died, while 집에 돌아가셨다 = went back home.

For 'died', a place/destination particle is absent.,Plain 죽다 is blunt; 돌아가시다 is respectful.
