Korean Grammar Patterns

잊힌 (O) vs 잊혀진 (X)

Meaning

No double passive

How to use it

Korean forms a passive with one marker. 잊다 → 잊히다 (be forgotten); the participle is 잊힌. Adding -어지다 on top (잊혀진) stacks two passives, which is grammatically wrong. Use one passive marker only.

Same error: 쓰여진(X)→쓰인(O), 닫혀진(X)→닫힌(O).,Spoken usage tolerates 잊혀진, but standard writing rejects it.

Examples

KoreanEnglish
잊힌 노래 (O) / 잊혀진 노래 (X)
ijhin norae (O) / ijhyeojin norae (X)
'잊힌 노래' (a forgotten song) is correct; 잊혀진 doubles the passive.
벽에 쓰인 글씨 (O) / 쓰여진 글씨 (X)
byeoge ssuin geulssi (O) / ssuyeojin geulssi (X)
'쓰인' (written) is right; '쓰여진' is a double passive.
문이 닫힌 채로 있었다 (O) / 닫혀진 (X)
muni dadhin chaero isseotda (O) / dadhyeojin (X)
'닫힌' (closed) is right; '닫혀진' stacks two passives.
