-다니 / -라니
Meaning
surprise/disbelief at what's said
How to use it
Expresses the speaker's shock or disbelief about a fact just heard or known. Verbs/adjectives take -다니, nouns and 이다 take -(이)라니. Can stand as an exclamatory fragment or lead into a comment.
Often follows a quoted fact: 그가 떠났다니 'He left?! (unbelievable).',Stronger emotion than plain -다고: implies the news is startling.
